Make A Gift Box Easter Hat

Easter is nearly here!! If your school is like mine and haven’t already done the Easter hat parade then you may find some last minute inspiration here.

My son (5) and I created this gift box headband hat. Here is what we used:

  • PVA glue
  • Hot glue
  • Foil wrapped Easter eggs
  • 30cm Ruler
  • Plastic headband
  • Chickens
  • Scizzors
  • Pen / pencil
  • Paper pretend hay / gift filler
  • Sticky Tape
  • 12 inch x 12 inch card stock paper – colours of choice
  • Any other decoration of your choice
  • Felt or / and ribbon

First choose what colour will be the base colour of your box. My son chose blue. Have your paper or card as a square before starting.

Divide your paper into 3 even rectangles width and length and then with a ruler, draw lines. Then create tabs with angled corners as you see in the image below. I have done up a template for you if you would like to use this to print out onto A3 paper and it will be a 10inch x 10inch square. open box template

Cut where the black lines are only.

Crease your fold lines in the direction that they will be folded in. Yours should look something like this…..

Next collect your choice of decorations and make the lid panels for your box. My son chose to have orange and black triangles, zig zags, and diamante stickers.

Make the lid tags by using the same width as you made the sides, the height is half that measurement, and then add a fold tab to attach it to the box.

Use your sticking method of choice here, I used sticky tape so it was quick. Fold your sides up and stick down your tabs. If you do use sticky tape you will find that you may have to tape the edges from the outside of the box too.

Now cut a strip of felt, ribbon, or card to cover your headband. We used felt and glued it using a hot glue gun. We then used the hot glue and another bit of felt to glue it onto the box base. You might want to do a better job than I did haha, I was in a rush. Also you might want to wait to fill the box before you glue it to the band.

Now fill your box with the pretend hay and decorations, and glue down everything. I would recommend probably using some larger eggs as well. These were just the ones we had left over from the other hats we made.

If you haven’t already, glue the box to your band. Now you are done! It may be quite wobbly on the head so ensure your decorations and box are firmly stuck down and not too far to the side of the head.

Happy Crafting and Happy Easter!!
